The inaugural underground water recycling unit of this nature was commissioned in Franschhoek in 2010, and since then, over 300 units have been deployed across eight African countries. Underground water recycling units are versatile, catering to residential, commercial, and community needs, with treatment capacities ranging from 1,500 to 15,000 liters per day.

Utilizing the underground water recycling unit for the treatment of both black and grey water enables every community nationwide to have access to flush toilets, without the need for potable water. The underground water recycling unit’s treated water can be repurposed for toilet flushing. In areas where space is at a premium, the underground water recycling unit can be conveniently installed in walkways or public open spaces. Any surplus treated water can be harnessed for irrigation. These units stand out as the only plants capable of serving diverse needs, from individual households to larger communities, from informal settlements to upscale estates, and from urban to the most remote locations.
